The European Week of Winter Sports is a European initiative aimed at promoting active lifestyles, social inclusion, and sustainable engagement in sport during the winter season. In Croatia, this initiative is being actively implemented through a rich and carefully designed programme in Primorsko-goranska County, which is preparing for its role as European Region of Sport 2026 and strengthening its strategic commitment to sport, physical activity, and community well-being.
Within the Croatian context, the European Week of Winter Sports highlights the country’s diverse natural landscapes and strong sporting tradition, particularly in winter and outdoor activities. The programme in Primorsko-goranska County offers citizens and visitors the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities adapted to different ages and levels of experience, including skiing and skibiking on Platak, winter hiking towards Snježnik, Nordic walking routes in Rijeka and Opatija, and skating and hockey activities in Delnice. These activities are designed to encourage participation, foster intergenerational interaction, and promote healthy and active living throughout the winter months.
A central focus of the European Week of Winter Sports in Croatia is accessibility and inclusion. The initiative aims to reduce barriers to participation and establish welcoming environments for families, children, young people, and elderly generations by extending winter sports and recreational activities to a broader audience. At the same time, the programme emphasises sustainability and responsible engagement with the natural environment, ensuring that winter sports development aligns with environmental protection and long-term community interests.
The European Week of Winter Sports also reflects Croatia’s alignment with European values and policy priorities related to health, social cohesion, and sustainable development through sport. Through cooperation with European partners and participation in this shared initiative, Croatia contributes to a broader movement that recognises sport as a tool for education, social inclusion, and positive societal impact.
